Fifty‐six isolates of Fusarium oxysporum from wilted cotton plants were characterized by (a) hydrolysis of aesculin and (b) utilization of the products glucose and aesculetin. Aesculin and aesculetin agars provided a simple in vitro test that enabled differentiation of pathogenic races of the cotton wilt pathogen.
