Abstract Teliospores of the soybean rust fungus ( Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd.) germinated after treatment with 10—12 wetting and drying cycles at room temperature. Spores swelled, vacuolated and germinated with a slightly curved basidium bearing 1—4 sterigmata with basidiospores. High germination rates were observed when telia were stored at 5 °C for 5—6 months before breaking dormancy.
