A rapid assay for monitoring peroxidase activity in melon as a marker for resistance to Pseudoperonospora cubensis was developed. A high correlation was demonstrated between peroxidase activity and resistance in test wells containing leaf disks of melon plants with known levels of susceptibility or resistance to P. cubensis. The possibility of using such an assay for a preliminary selection of melons resistant to P. cubensis is suggested.
