The hypersensitive reaction of Petunia axillaris cv. ‘M’ to TMV‐SM 1 strain is accompanied by the production of 4 unusual proteins in the tissues around the necrotic local lesions. These proteins called d 1 , d 2 , d 3 and d 4 , according to their decreasing electrophoretic mobility, are composed of a monomer of either 27,000 d (d 2 and d 4 ), 34,500 d (d 3 ) or 20,000 d (d 1 ). They do not appear to be related to the b 1 of the PR (b) proteins synthesized by Nicotiana species in response to TMV infection.
