Summary Cells of the inner epidermis of the bean endocarp after infection with a spore suspension of Alternaria show a specific pattern of ectodesms which changes with progressing growth of the infection hypha. The concentric pattern is a sign of the balance between the attack of the fungus and the defence reaction of the host plant which results in production of phytoalexins.
