Summary Degranulation of rat mast cells (MCs) involves specific proteins such as the synaptosomal‐associated protein of 23 kDa (SNAP‐23) and syntaxin 4. Eosinophilic granule cells (EGC S ) in teleosts have been proposed to be the functional equivalent of MCs in mammals. By immunocytochemistry it was found to be an expression of SNAP‐23 and syntaxin 4 in peritoneal EGC S /MCs from tilapia, suggesting their participation in the degranulation process.
