Survival of gall midge populations depends on many variables, but unfavourable climatic and environmental factors are particularly important for these fragile insects. Like most animal groups, gall midges have a number of adaptations that enhance the chances of survival of the population, but not necessarily individuals. In this paper we present examples of some of the adaptations that have occurred in the gall midges based on our own previous work in the field and laboratory and that of other researchers.
