The possibility of controlling of Synanthedon myopaeformis Bkh. by mass‐trapping operations was investigated in Northern Italy from 1986 to 1991. In the experiments the effectiveness of 6 kinds of traps (3 sticky traps and 3 funnel traps), four doses of pheromone, the catching power of the traps changing their position on the trees, the interactions between pheromone traps placed along or across the mean wind direction and those between a central trap surrounded by four traps in a circle was considered. According to the results obtained during these preliminary experiments, and using an empirical method in 1990 and 1991, the effectiveness of controlling of 3 different trap densities per ha was considered: 6 traps/ha, 12 traps/ha, and 24 traps/ha. The results obtained with the empirical method suggest the possibility of operating with suitable performance in the trapping of 5. myopaeformis with 12 traps per ha. Comparing these values with those obtained in the preliminary tests reveal that the differences are small.
