Biological control of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom., Aphididae): pre‐introduction evaluation of natural enemies

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is an increasing problem in glasshouse vegetables. Presently it can only be controlled by non‐selective chemicals, which inhibits the use of biological control of other pests in the glasshouse. Therefore a project has been initiated to investigate the possibility of biological control of A. gossypii. In this paper, literature on the biology of A. gossypii and its natural enemies is reviewed and the research outline for a justified selection of natural enemies is presented. Research to develop biological control of A. gossypii can be divided into two main lines. First of all, a selection of a potential candidate for the control of A. gossypii has to be made. The use of criteria for such a selection is discussed. Secondly, an efficient method has to be developed for the introduction of natural enemies in a glasshouse. Due to the large reproductive capacity of aphids, the continuous presence of natural enemies is very important. This continuous presence might be realized by an open rearing system of natural enemies reared on another species of aphid which is harmless to the crop. Zusammenfassung Zur biologischen Bekämpfung von Aphis gossypii Glov. (Hom., Aphididae) in Glashäusern. Bewertung der möglichen natürlichen Feinde Die Blattlaus Aphis gossypii bildet ein wachsendes Problem im Glashaus‐Gemüsebau. Gegenwärtig kann sie nur mit nicht‐selektiven Chemikalien bekämpft werden, wodurch andere biologische Bekämpfungsmaßnahmen in Glashäusern beeinträchtigt werden. Es wurde daher ein Projekt zur biologischen Bekämpfung von A. gossypii in die Wege geleitet. In dieser Veröffentlichung werden die Literatur über die Biologie der Blattlaus und ihrer natürlichen Feinde ausgewertet und ein Rahmen für die Bewertung der natürlichen Feinde gegeben. Zur Entwicklung der biologischen Bekämpfung von A. gossypii müssen 2 Hauptlinien verfolgt werden. Zunächst muß die wirksamste Antagonistengruppe selektioniert werden. Die Kriterien ihrer Auswahl werden erörtert. Sodann muß eine wirksame Methode zur Ausbringung der Antagonisten in die Glashäuser erstellt werden. Entsprechend der großen Reproduktionskapazität der Blattläuse ist eine kontinuierliche Anwesenheit der Gegenspieler notwendig. Das könnte man dadurch erreichen, daß man gleichzeitig andere, harmlose Blattläuse als Nebenwirte und ‐beute verwendet.
