Relationship between pheromone titer and mating in Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lep., Noctuidae)

Sex pheromone glands of Heliothis virescens contained pheromone at all times during scotophase, and levels peaked between 27 and 33, 51 and 57, 75 and 81, and 99 and 105 hours after emergence. These periods occurred between the 4th and 10th hours of scotophase. Peak mating in females corresponded to the pheromone peaks. Proportions of the pheromone components as well as quantity influenced mating. Components of the pheromone that were significantly correlated with mating were (Z)‐11‐hexadecenal, (Z)‐9‐tetradecenal, hexadecanal, (Z)‐11‐hexadecenol, and tetradecanal. Zusammenfassung Zur Beziehung zwischen Pheromontiter und Paarung bei Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lep., Noctuidae) Während der gesamten Scotophase enthielten die Sexualpheromondrüsen von Heliothis virescens Pheromon, wobei Spitzenwerte in den Zeiträumen von 27–33, 51–57, 75–81 und 99–105 Stunden nach dem Schlüpfen auftraten. Diese Zeiträume lagen zwischen der 4. und 10. Stunde der Scotophase. Die Paarungshäufigkeit der Weibchen korrelierte mit den Spitzenwerten der Pheromonausscheidung. Folgende Pheromonkomponenten korrelieren signifikant mit der Paarung: (Z)‐11‐hexadecenal, (Z)‐9‐tetradecepal, hexadecanal, (Z)‐11‐hexadecenol und tetradecanal.
