Types of responses of Galleria mellonella (L.) larvae (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) on treatments with precocenes

The effects of precocene I and II (20–100 μg/larva), on the growth and development of fourth, fifth, and sixth‐instar larvae of Galleria mellonella were studied. Precocenes, given topically, caused a mortality rate in a dose‐dependent manner, and acted as feeding deterrent by reducing the amount of food eaten. The interecdysial period for the survived larvae was prolonged in 4th and 5th instars. Consequently, the pupal weight was affected negatively. No significant difference between precocenes type was observed. The results are discussed according to the available knowledge on the biochemical interactions of precocenes. Zusammenfassung Reaktionstypen der Larven von Galleria mellonella (L.) (Lep., Pyralidae) bei Behandlung mit Precocenen Es wurden die Wirkungen von Precocen I und Precocen II (20‐100 μg/L) auf das Wachstum und die Entwicklung der L 4 ‐L 6 von G. mellonella untersucht. Precocen, topikal appliziert, verursachte eine Dosis‐abhängige Mortalitätsrate und wirkte durch Verminderung der Nahrungsmenge als Fraßhemmstoff. Die Zwischenhäutungsperiode der überlebenden Larven wurde bei den L 4 und L 5 verlängert, was einen negativen Einfluß auf das Puppengewicht hatte. Signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Precocenen wurden nicht beobachtet. Die Ergebnisse werden in bezug auf die bisherigen Kenntnisse über die Wirkung von Precocen erörtert.
