Assessment of the role of larvae of Coccinella undecimpunctata L. (Col., Coccinellidae) as a biological control agent against Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lep., Noctuidae) in Epypt

Appearently aphids are the most important prey for the larvae of C. undecimpunctata. All other tested preys such as eggs or first instar larvae of S. littoralis did not constitute an appropriate food material to the larvae since they were not able to complete their development and no single larvae could survive on such a prey till pupation. It is quite obvious that the predator's third and fourth instar larvae consumed a considerable number of eggs and first instar larvae of S. littoralis whether they were offered alone or in combination. On the other hand when the eggs and larvae of S. littoralis were mixed with nymphs of A. punicae , the predator larvae consumed a rather small number of these eggs and larvae in comparison to the number of aphid nymphs consumed. Zusammenfassung Untersuchungen über die Bedeutung der Larven von Coccinella undecimpunctata L. für die biologische Bekämpfung von Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lep., Noctuidae) in Ägypten Blattläuse bilden offensichtlich die wichtigste Beute der C. undecimpunctata ‐Larven. Alle anderen getesteten Beutetiere wie Eier und Erstlarven von S. littoralis stellen keine geeignete Nahrung für die Coccinella ‐Larven dar, da sie diesen die Vollendung der Entwicklung nicht ermöglichen. Die Dritt‐ und Viertlarven des Prädators verzehrten zwar eine beträchtliche Anzahl an Eiern und Erstlarven von S. littoralis , wenn diese allein oder beide in Kombination angeboten wurden. Jedoch fraßen die Käferlarven viel weniger davon, wenn ihnen zusätzlich Nymphen der Blattlaus A. punicea zur Verfügung standen.
