Studies on host selection, flight behaviour and control of the Ceanothus leaf miner Tischeria immaculata (Braun) (Lep., Tischeriidae)

At temperatures between 21 and 13 °C tischeriid adults emerge and fly in the evening hours. These insects are very weak fliers and are readily caught in traps set below 30 cm, apparently dispersed by a gentle wind blowing in North‐east direction. Female insects normally settle and oviposit on un‐mined leaves. As alternative they prefer mined leaves to a non host. Control trials indicate that contact insecticide (Diazinon) applied at oviposition period is effective against first instar larvae. Otherwise a relatively systemic insecticide (Orthene) will take care of later instars. Zusammenfassung Über Wirtswahl, Flugverhalten und Bekämpfung der Miniermotte Tischeria immaculata (Braun) (Lep., Tischeriidae) Die Imagines von T. immaculata flogen abends und nachts bei Temperaturen zwischen 21 und 13 °C. Sie sind schlechte Flieger und werden überwiegend in Bodennähe bis 30 cm Höhe gefangen, wobei ihre Flugverteilung offensichtlich von den in nordöstlicher Richtung wehenden Winden bestimmt wird. Weibchen finden sich und legen ihre Eier normalerweise auf unminierten Blättern von Ceanothus sp. Eher als minierte Ceanothus ‐Blätter suchen sie noch die Blätter von Nicht‐Wirtspflanzen auf. Bekämpfungsversuche zeigten, daß das Kontaktinsektizid Diazinon, während der Eiablage ausgebracht, gegen die jungen Larven wirksam war. Dagegen wirkte das systemische Insektizid Orthene auch gegen ältere Larven.
