Adult emergence and survival of the cowpea seed beetle exposed as eggs to the hormonoid Altosid

Survival and adult emergence of the cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) were examined under normal conditions and after Altosid treatment of one and three day old eggs. The obtained data showed that this juvenile hormone analogue reduced significantly the adult emergence and the higher the concentration the higher the reduction in survival. It was quite clear that the compound was more potent when applied to newly laid eggs, particularly, at higher concentrations. The merits of using juvenile hormone analogues to control such significant pest of Stored grains are discussed. Zusammenfassung Über die Käferschlüpfquote und Lebensdauer des Erbsensamenkäfers nach Behandlung der Eier mit dem Hormonoid Altosid Nach Behandlung der Eier mit zunehmenden Konzentrationen des Juvenilhormonoids Altosid ergaben sich gleichsinnige Verminderungen der Schlüpfquote und der Lebensdauer der Adulten. Dabei war die Wirkung am stärksten, wenn frisch abgelegte Eier behandelt wurden. Die Möglichkeit, Juvenilhormonoide zur biotechnischen Bekämpfung von Schädlingen gelagerter Samen zu verwenden, wird erörtert.
