Wild and honey bees as pollinators of 10 plant species in Assiut area, Egypt

The importance of wild bees as compared with honey bee as pollinators was surveyed in Assiut area. 12 genera of the wild and honey bees belonging to 7 families were identified on 10 different plant species including 5 vegetable crops during their flowering period. The honey and wild bees genera and their families were as follow: Apis (Apidae); Andrena (Andrenidae); Anthophora, Nomada and Amegilla (Anthophoridae); Halictus, Nomia und Nomioides (Halictidae); Megachile and Coelioxys (Megachilidae); Prosopis (Colletidae) and Ceratina (Xylocopidae). It was found that honey bee consisted more than 67% of the total bees visiting broad bean, mustard, cabbage, clover, sun‐flower and coriander. In contrast, for radish, wormwood, carrot and grasses their power of pollination is limited. Zusammenfassung Wild‐ und Honigbienen als Bestäuber von 10 Pflanzenarten im Gebiet von Assiut, ägypten Im Gebiet von Assiut wurden 1981 12 Gattungen von Wild‐ und Honigbienen, welche 7 Familien angehören, als Bestäuber von 10 Pflanzenarten (davon 5 Gemüsepflanzen) festgestellt. Die Gattungen und Familien waren Apis (Apidae); Andrena (Andrenidae); Anthophora, Nomada und Amegilla (Anthophoridae); Halictus, Nomia und Nomioides (Halictidae); Megachile und Coelioxys (Megachilidae); Prosopis (Colletidae) und Ceratina (Xylocopidae). Es zeigte sich, daß die Honigbienen mehr als 67% aller Bienenarten, welche Bohne, Senf, Klee, Sonnenblume und Koriander bestäubten, ausmachten. Dagegen ist ihre Bedeutung als Bestäuber von Rettich, Kamille, Möhre und Gräsern gering.
