Greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westw.) (Hom., Aleyrodidae) in Japan and possibilities for its control by Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hym., Aphelinidae)

The greenhouse whitefly was found in Japan for the first time in 1974. It is now regarded as an important greenhouse pest. The use of Encarsia formosa is one of the solutions to control whiteflies avoiding the hazards that arise from the excessive use of insecticides. Environmental conditions in greenhouses in Japan affecting the control possibilities of E. formosa are evaluated. These conditions indicate that the use of this parasite should be promoted in tomato crops as a first step towards a biological control of pests in greenhouses. Zusammenfassung Die Gewächshaus‐Mottenschildlaus, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westw.) (Hom., Aleyrodidae) in Japan und Möglichkeiten zu ihrer Bekämpfung mit Encarsia formosa Gah. (Hym., Aphelinidae) Die Weiße Fliege, Trialeurodes vaporariorum , wurde in japanischen Gewächshäusern zum erstenmal 1974 gefunden. Sie gilt heute als wichtiger Gewächshausschädling. Der Einsatz der Schlupfwespe Encarsia formosa wäre eine der Lösungen zur Bekämpfung des Schädlings; die Gefahren, die sich aus dem Gebrauch von Insektiziden ergeben, ließen sich damit vermeiden. Die Umweltbedingungen in japanischen Gewächshäusern, die die Wirksamkeit von Encarsia formosa mitbestimmen, werden erörtert. Für den Anfang sollte man die Verwendung der Schlupfwespe an Tomaten fördern.
