Abstract On the pests of Cape Verde Islands On the Cape Verde Islands, which were repeatedly hit by severe drought during the last decades, mites and insects play an important role as crop pests. During the last few years 4 species of mites, 5 species of grasshoppers, 2 species of thrips, 4 species of bugs, 34 species of homopterous insects, 2 species of weevils, 17 species of moths and butterflies and 2 species of fruit flies were collected on crops grown on the islands. Some of these mite and insect species are major pests, for instance Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acarina), Oedalus senega‐lensis (Orthoptera), Nezara viridula (Heteroptera), Coccus viridis (Homoptera), Cylas puncticollis (Coleoptera), Etiella zinckenella, Sesamia nonagrioides, Agrotis segetum (Le‐pidoptera) and Dacus ciliatus (Diptera). B. Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acarina), Oedalus senegalensis (Orthoptera), Nezara viridula (Heteroptera), Coccus viri‐dis (Homoptera), Cylas puncticollis (Coleoptera), Etiella zinckenella, Sesamia nonagrioides, Agrotis segetum, Heliothis armigera (Lepidoptera) und Dacus ciliatus (Diptera).
