A new artificial diet for rearing Chrysopa carnea larvae (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae)

An artificial diet for rearing Chrysopa carnea larvae composed of commercially easily acquired ingredients (5 g honey, 5 g sugar, 5 g food yeast flakes, 6 g yeast enzymatic hy‐drolysate, 1 g casein enzymatic hydrolysate, 10 g egg yolk and 68 ml distilled water) has been developed. Three successive generations of C. carnea larvae were cultured on the diet, the larval development took 11.7 d compared with 8.8 d by feeding on Sitotroga cerealella eggs and the pupal weight was 10.6 mg compared with 11.3 mg respectively. It is suggested that the diet may be useful as a supplementary larval food in the mass production of this beneficial arthropod. Zusammenfassung Ein neues künstliches Futter zur Aufzucht von Chrysopa carnea‐Larven (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) Es wurde ein künstliches Futter zur Aufzucht von Chrysopa carnea ‐Larven entwickelt, das sich aus folgenden und im Handel leicht erhältlichen Produkten zusammensetzt: 5 g Bienen‐honig, 5 g Zucker, 5 g Nährhefeflocken, 6 g Hefehydrolysat, 1 g Caseinhydrolysat, 10 g Ei‐gelb und 68 ml destilliertes Wasser. Mit diesem Futter wurden 3 aufeinanderfolgende Gene‐rationen von C. carnea ‐Larven gezüchtet, deren Larvenentwicklung 11,8 d dauerte im Ver‐gleich zu 8,8 d bei Fütterung mit Sitotroga cerealella ‐Eiern; das Puppengewicht betrug 10,6 mg verglichen mit 11,3 mg. Es dürfte sich lohnen, diese Diät als zusätzliches Futter für die Larven in der Massenzucht dieses Nützlings zu verwenden.
