Observations on food preference and feeding habits of three important species of Acrididae in the Sudan

Studies on food preference had indicated that although Schistocerca gregaria was polyphagous in feeding, it showed some preference for dicotyledonous plants eating about 11.8 g and 9.8 g of Medicago sativa (Berseem) and Sesame orientale (Simsim), respectively, compared to 2.4 g and 1.8 g of Pennisetum typhoideum and Sorghum vulgare , respectively. in a period of 6 days. As for Locusta migratoria migratorioides , it generally preferred graminaceous plants, it failed to complete several instars when reared on cotton and broad beans (Ful masri). The third grashopper, Poecilocerus hieroglyphicus preferred Calotropis procera. Vicia faba (Ful masri), Cucumis melo and Euphorbia heterophylla were also eaten. On the basis of dry matter consumption, it consumed 11.77 g of C. procera compared to 4.04 g, 4.11 g and 6.02 g of V. faba, C. melo and E. heterophylla , respectively, in a period of 6 days. Zusammenfassung Über die Ernährung und Nahrungspflanzenpräferenz von 3 wichtigen Heuschreckenarten des Sudans Bei Nahrungswahl‐Versuchen zeigte die Wüstenheuschrecke Schistocerca gregaria sich als polyphag, jedoch unter Präferenz für dicotyle Pflanzen, von denen sie in 6 Tagen i. M. 11,8 g ( Medicago sativa ) und 9,8 g ( Sesame orientate ) gegenüber den monocotylen, nämlich 2,4 g ( Pennisetum typhoideum ) und 1,8 g ( Sorghum vulgare ) fraß. Die afrikanische Wanderheuschrecke Locusta migratoria zog dagegen Gräser als Nahrung vor und gelangte an Baumwolle und Bohnen nicht zu voller Entwicklung. Die 3. im Sudan wichtige Heuschrecke, Poecilocerus hieroglyphicus , zeigte Vorliebe für Calotropis proceva (11,7 g), während sie Euphorbia heterophylla (6,02 g), Cucumis melo (4,11 g) und Vicia faba (4,04 g) in wesentlich geringerem Maße fraß.
