Du‐Ter as inhibitor to the reproduction of the spiny bollworm, Earias insulana (Boisd.) (Lep., Noctuidae)

The adults of the spiny bollworm, Earias insulana (Boisd.) were orally treated with Du‐Ter (47.8% triphenyl‐tin‐hydroxide) at four concentrations i.e. 0.062, 0.125, 0.250 and 0.500%. Du‐Ter noticeably reduced the number and viability of eggs. The sterilizing effect of Du‐Ter was temporary and its intensity decreased as the time elapsed after treatment. The oviposition period in treated females was much shorter and the number of matings was slightly lower than the check. Shorter ovarioles were obtained in treated females, while testes in treated males remained unaffected. Zusammenfassung Wirkungen von Du Ter auf die Reproduktion von Earias insulana (Boisd.) (Lep., Noctuidae) Es wurden den Faltern von E. insulana Harzlösungen mit Du Ter (47,8% Triphenyl‐tinhydroxid) in 4 Konzentrationen (0,062 – 0,125 – 0,250 – 0,500%) als Imaginalnahrung gereicht. Als Folge ergab sich eine Verminderung der Zahl und der Schlüpffähigkeit der Eier. Der sterilisierende Effect an Du Ter war jedoch begrenzt, und seine Intensität nahm mit der Zeit der Nahrungs‐(Du Ter‐)Aufnahme ab. Die Eiablageperiode bei behandelten Weibchen war erheblich länger als bei normalen Weibchen und die Zahl der Kopulationen etwas geringer. Es wurden bei behandelten Weibchen längere Ovariolen beobachtet, während die Hoden behandelter Männchen keine Veränderung zeigten.
