The importance of “motivation” during an insects life span using host selection behaviour in aphids as an example In studies of insect behaviour, especially those having an applied nature, the rôle of external stimuli are normally stressed. In this paper the influence of internal “readiness” is discussed, its effect on behaviour is outlined, and the following examples on host selection in aphids are presented: migration, mobility and age, “fall down” reaction, starvation, short visits on different plants, and influence of weather. Differences in behaviour in the insects tested demonstrated the importance of proper pre‐conditioning of the insects, particularly in applied studies, for example in virus vector experiments. It is suggested that the term “motivation” or in german “Stimmung” be used as a general working‐term whenever the behavioural phenomen can not be described precisely using the terminology available in present day ethology. Zusammenfassung Das Verhalten von Insekten wird nicht nur durch äußere Reize, sondern auch durch die innere Handlungsbereitschaft entscheidend bestimmt. Anhand von Beispielen aus dem Bereich der Blattlaus‐Wirtspflanzen‐Beziehungen wird die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Handlungsbereitschaft für das Verhalten von Testtier‐Gruppen demonstriert. Die sich daraus ergebenden Konsequenzen für eine sorgsame Vorbehandlung und Auslese von Tieren für experimentelle Untersuchungen werden erörtert und der Begriff “Stimmung”, englisch “motivation”, als allgemeiner Arbeitsbegriff für das Phänomen der inneren Handlungsbereitschaft zur Diskussion gestellt.
