Mass marking techniques for European cherry fruit fly. I. Application and identification of topical fluorescent aerosol‐marker The potential mass marking procedures for Rhagoletis cerasi in on‐going SIT programs are reviewed and evaluated. Preliminary tests with orally applied dyes produced negative results. The development and use of a topical marking technique is described. It consists of the application of a fluorescent aerosol paint‐spray that does not show the disadvantages of the widely used DAY‐GLO such as negative influence of flight activities, easy clean‐off by the flies or time‐consuming examination of ptilinum. The persistence of the marker is satisfactory and all marked individuals could be identified 4 weeks after marking under laboratory conditions. The method is cheap and simple and is the standard component of a double‐marking system presently used in the Swiss SIT program. Zusammenfassung Einleitend werden mögliche, teilweise in der Literatur erwähnte Markierungsverfahren für Insekten auf ihre Vor‐ und Nachteile untersucht. Eigene Versuche mit oral an Imagines applizierten Farblösungen verliefen negativ. Eingehende Versuche werden zur Entwicklung eines neuen, topikal an Imagines der Kirschenfliege ( R. cerasi ) applizierbaren Markierungsverfahrens beschrieben. Sowohl Applikation wie auch Nachweisverfahren werden erläutert. Die Zuverlässigkeit des Krylon‐Verfahrens ist unter kontrollierbaren Laborbedingungen sehr hoch. Das Verfahren beeinflußt die Überlebensrate, Fekundität und Fertilität sowie die beiden untersuchten Qualitätskriterien ‐ Flug und Kopulationsgeschwindigkeit ‐ nicht negativ.
