As to food quality of spruce needles for forest damaging insects. 3. Changes in content of chemical compounds of the needles caused by physiological factors. In spruce needles such as used for feeding the larvae of Gilpinia hercyniae the content of soluble carbohydrates, of free and of proteinbound amino acids is determined monthly for the duration of one year on material taken directly from the tree (ill's 1–4). The content of these compounds as influenced by the age of the needles (ill. 5) and by the time during which the cut‐off branches were kept under semisterile conditions (ill. 6) are also described. The amount and the quality of the acids taken up by Gilpinia hercyniae based on the analysis of the faeces is shown in the one example of proteinbound amino acids (ill. 7).
