On the labial glands of the larva of the House Longhorn Beetle, Hylotrupes bajulus (L.) . The larva of the House Longhorn Beetle possesses a pair of tubular labial glands which lie on the ventral side of the head capsule. Their topographical relations and course in the body of the larva are described. The gland body contains an epithelium tissue, the cells of which function as gland cells. There are no special cell structures to eject out the secretary matter. It is assumed here that the labial glands represent salivary glands, which produce a salivary secretion, probably with enzymes. This salivary secretion helps in wetting the rather dry wood substrate and thus faciliting the passage through the digestive gut. The secretion substance could also represent a kind of lubricant for the articulations of the chewing mouth parts. Zusammenfassung Die Hausbocklarve besitzt schlauchförmige Labialdrüsen, die paarweise ventral in der Kopfkapsel liegen. Ihre topographischen Lagebeziehungen und ihr Verlauf im Larvenkörper werden beschrieben. Der Drüsenkörper enthält einen Verband von Epithelien, die als Drüsenzellen funktionieren. Besondere sekretausleitende Zellstrukturen sind nicht vorhanden. Es wird angenommen, daß die Labialdrüsen “echte” Speicheldrüsen sind, die einen — vielleicht auch fermenthaltigen Speichel erzeugen, der die verhältnismäßig trockene Holznahrung anfeuchtet und sie dadurch für die Darmpassage gleitfähiger macht. Das Sekret könnte auch eine Art Schmiermittel für die Gelenke der kauenden Mundteile darstellen.
