Abstract Varieties of Mangifera indica L. are differently succeptible to infestation with the scale insect, Mycetaspis personatus Comstock. No positive correlation is found between the thickness of the leaf cuticle in different varieties and their susceptibility to infestation. Chemical analysis of the percentages of carbohydrates, nitrogen, phosphorous, chlorophyll and carotenoids as well as the phytochemical screening of alkaloids, tannins, polyphenols, unsaturated sterols and flavonoids of different varieties showed no consistent correlation with the level of infestation.
