The present investigation evaluates the relative efficiency of certain sampling methods for the assessment of the larval and pupal populations of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) in clover fields. Sampling was carried out in four successive seasons (1963/64, 1966/67), at three aparted regions (Sakha, Giza and Sids). It was indicated that, for assessing larval population density, soil‐sieving method was more reliable than net‐sweeping or row‐clearing methods. For the assessment of pupal population density, row‐clearing method proved more efficient than that of soil‐sieving.
