Studies on the distribution and ecology of the ants of the chief forest‐types of Central‐European mountains . In the four regions of the mountain forests of Central Europe (Central German mountains, Southern Black Forest, Swiss Jura and East Alps) a total of 43 species of Formicidae have been found. M. ruginodis was the most abundant species, followed by F. lemani, L. niger, L. acervorum, C. herculeanus and F. fusca. Based on the number of nests (abundance) L. niger ranks first (representing 25,5% of all nests encountered), followed by F. lemani (17%), M. ruginodis (12%) and F. fusca (7%). The different forest (and stand) types and investigation areas are characterized according to their special ant fauna, and the regional and vertical distribution of the more abundant species is discussed. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the artificial propagation of useful forest ants.
