Summary Studies were carried out on the food selection and food collecting of Paravespula germanica and P. vulgaris in flight cages in the city area of Berlin. The wasps obtain carbohydrate mainly in the form of fruit, cakes and other sweets, protein in the form of flies and other living insects as well as meat and fish. The insects reacted most strongly to optical stimuli. A strict division of labour as well as a “talking” such as in bees does not occur in wasps.
