Summary The economic development of agriculture causes new problems, especially for field cultivation, by the simplification and mechanisation of farm operations and by changes of the market. So it is necessary to intensify the pest control, on the other hand an increased treatment with insecticides is unwanted because of the hygienic and biozönotic secondary effect. In this situation it is urgent to integrate chemical control with preventive agricultural measures as well as with biological control of pests. For this purpose more exact knowledge has to be elaborated on the quantitative relations between density of population of insects and the caused damage as well as on the quantitative effect of parasites and predators on the development of pests. (Examples are mentioned.) The economic adaption of farming is followed by a decrease of the number of crops in rotation and by an expansion of the area cultivated with the same crop. The discussion on the few reports which are known shows that many problems will have to be investigated more exactly. This also applies to the influence of soil and of soil cultivation, to the study of the influence of fertilizers on infection and resistance, and above all to the investigations on resistance of plant varieties. For already slight differences in resistance can prevent damage to a great extent on the way of their influence on the epidemic connected with preventive measures and economical application of insecticides. As successful plant protection can only be carried through in team‐work by phytopathologists, entomologists, and agronomists, uniform definitions (especially in the field of plant breeding for resistance!) and active exchange of results must be aimed.
