Summary The paper discusses the value of comparative studies of the parasite complex of a given insects species as a tool in biogeography. The parasite complex of the larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii Hart., in central Europe, northern Japan, and North America is taken as an example from which the conclusion can be derived that P. erichsonii cannot be a primary holarctic species, but must be an introduction, or, more likely, a (diluvial?) immigrant in North America.
