Summary The paper reviews the post‐war mass outbreaks of the small spruce sawfly in Austria. The incidence of this pest was most pronounced in lowland areas in which the original deciduous woods hat been replaced by monocultures of Norway spruce. In chemical control, BCH, parathion and malathion gave good results. Excellent success was also obtained with “Sevin” and “Kerfex”, the latter product having proved to be particularly easy to handle.
