Summary Important insect pests – for example, termites, ants grasshoppers, flies, bugs and fleas – are frequently recorded in the classical literature of mankind (Indian myths, Bible, Homer, Dante, Goethe) and have often been subjects of poetry. The damage and epidemics caused by these insects has also been treated by literates all along. Since Linné, insect nomenclature has frequently made use of names of antique legendary persons, and particularly butterflies have been named so.
