Inbreeding and its effects on some productive and reproductive traits in a Murrah buffalo herd

Summary Data concerning genealogy, milk yield, lactation length, calving interval and age at first calving, obtained from Murrah buffaloes on a farm in Säo Paulo state, Brazil, were studied in order to determine the presence of inbreeding in the herd and to evaluate its effects as well as the effects of some environmental factors on productive and reproductive traits. The mean inbreeding coefficient estimated for 2414 animals, born from 1965 to 1995 was 2.94%. Of these animals, 47% were considered inbred with a mean inbreeding coefficient equal 6.25%. Milk production, lactation length, calving interval and age at first calving averaged 1493.3 ± 60.7 kg, 271.0 ± 37.3 days, 385.0 ± 53.4 days and 39.05 ± 6.95 months, respectively. Among all four traits, only lactation length was affected by inbreeding. Zusammenfassung Inzucht und ihre Wirkungen auf Produktions‐ und Reproduktionseigenschaften von Murrah Büffel Abstammung, Milchmenge, Laktationslänge, Zwischenkalbezeit und Erstkalbealter einer Herde Murrah Büffel im Sao Paulo Staat wurden hinsichtlich Inzucht, ihre Wirkung und die einiger Umwelteinflüsse auf Produktions‐ und Reproduktionnseigenschaften analysiert. Der mittlere Inzuchtkoeffizient der zwischen 1965 und 1995 geborenen 2414 Tiere war 2.94%, der der 47% ingezüchteten 6.25%. Milchleitstung, Laktations länge, Zwischenkalbezeit und Erstkalbealter waren durchschnittlich 1493.3 ± 60.7 kg, 271 ± 37.3 Tage, 385 ± 53.4 Tage und 39.05 ± 6.95 Monate; nur Laktationslänge wurde von Inzucht beeinflußt.
