Proceeding from the structures and hypotheses of the CERES and SALUS models a model for considering manures has been developed. The model includes the following processes: infiltration during application, ammonia volatilization, leaching of ammonium and organic bound nitrogen and mineralization before incorporation, incorporation, ammonia volatilization, mineralization and leaching of organic bound nitrogen after incorporation. With the CERES Maize model combined with the manure model simulations were calculated concerning the following problems: – influence of application time of slurry on nitrate leaching under German site conditions and – influence of long‐term slurry fertilization and of stopping slurry fertilization on organic N content, mineralization, uptake by maize and leaching under Southern Michigan site conditions. Results and conclusions are presented.
