Summary The inhibiting effect of sugar‐beet chitinase, a defence enzyme in plants, on the growth of the fungi Heterobasidion annosum and Gremmeniella abietina was examined. The enzyme inhibited the growth of H. annosum , but had no effect on G. abietina . The role of hydrolytic enzymes in defence is briefly discussed.
