Summary Heterobasidion annosum was found to be the main cause of decay in 50–60‐year‐old Scots pine in Thetford Forest in East England. On some sites, up to 15% of the trees could be suffering from H. annosum rot, with decay occasionally extending 2 m or more up the stem. Prior to this study, Scots pine had been considered as resistant to H. annosum butt‐rot in Britain, except in overmature trees.
