Records from western hemlock ( Tsuga heterophylla ) trees naturally exposed to infection by hemlock dwarf mistletoe ( Arceuthobium tsugense ) and controlled inoculations of grafted branch scions from a selection of these trees indicated a repeatability of the levels of resistance to the disease in the clonal material. Evidence pointed to a resistance mechanism operating within, rather than outside, the host branch.
