Long intermittent exposures of Araucaria cunninghamii to SO 2 and NO 2 produced complex interactions with effects on resource allocation and plant morphology. Exposure to NO 2 decreased chlorophyll concentrations but increased stem diameter and shoot fresh weight, in an apparent compensatory response, altering the growth form of the tree. The effects of NO 2 were counteracted by the additional presence of SO 2 , although SO 2 alone had little effect.
