Axenic cultures of Peridermium pini obtained from aeciospores on diseased Pinus sylvestris in north‐east Scotland typically had an ill‐defined margin and a fluffy surface, while those from East Anglia had a well‐defined margin and appeared mucilaginous. The difference in colony ap‐pearance is consistent with other evidence for a distinction between the forms of P. pini in the two parts of the United Kingdom. After a few months, thin sectors, comprising a rapidly expanding hyphal network, developed in some cultures from both spore sources.
