Comparative studies of type and herbarium specimens of Marssonina species pathogenic to poplars showed that recognition of four species viz., M. populi, M. castagnei, M. balsamiferae and M. brunnea is warranted. M. tremutae, M. tremuloidis and M. populina were considered to be synonymous with M. brunnea , which has priority. Morphological features of conidia (shape, mean dimensions, size ratios and septum location) proved useful differential taxonomic criteria.
