Data obtained from spore trapping studies in the field and in controlled climate chambers indicated that leaf wetting was the most important factor controlling ascospore release in Mycosphaerella cryptica . Temperature was also important, no spores being released at <10°C or >30°C. There was no diurnal or nocturnal pattern of ascospore discharge.
