Light and electron microscopical changes were studied in needles of yellowing spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] in Königstein, Taunus mountains, in West‐Germany. One‐to‐three‐year‐old needles were taken from 25‐ and about 60‐year‐old healthy‐looking and yellowing spruces. The results showing advance of damage in the needles and the nature of the ultrastructural injuries are discussed in relation to possible causing factors, especially air pollutants.
