Spore populations of Melampsòra medusae among Populus spp. were metered with spore traps along a north‐south axis in the central United States. Uredospores were collected earliest yearly at the southernmost location and at the northernmost locations where Larix laricina exist. They were found at other locations at progressively later dates. Aeciospores were found only at northern locations within the range of larch. Differences in uredospore numbers were related to variations in temperature and rainfall.
