The decay of a 20‐year‐old stand of Populus tremula growing on old agricultural waste land was observed from 1975 to 1981. There were 16 species of pathogenic and saprophytic fungi found on dying and dead trees, of which Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. and Cytospora chrysosperma Fr. were the most frequent. The circumstances of combined action of both fungi in the disease process are discussed.
