Morphological classification of oak and beech ectomycorrhizae in the north‐east of France. The mycorrhizae are classed into three main groups (according to the structure of the outer mantle and of attached mycelium) and thirteen types. Each type is illustrated by photographs and a precise description. The morphological differentiation from group 1 to group 3 is pointed out, in relation to the place of the fungus in the systematic classification of species. The possible relationships between the morphology of mycorrhizae and their nutritional efficiency is discussed.
