Abstract The growth of Fomes annosus in liquid medium was inhibited by phenols which were oxidized by the fungus and/or induced high laccase acitivity. The effect of some of the tested phenols was different when they were applied to wood. The applicability of hydroquinone in spruce‐stems as protecting agent against invasion of F o mes annosus is discussed.
