Secondary needles of Pinus sylvestris afford at least five distinct habitats in which microfungi mature and fruit. Three are occupied profusely by Lophodermium , a different species in each ( L. pinastri on senesced needles, L. conigenum on needles on dying trees or branches and L. seditiosum on young needles on seedlings and in young plantations). The biology of each species is examined in its appropriate habitat.
