By light microscope investigations published in the year 1940 the basidiospores of Heterobasidion annosum were described as echinulate and skew, the conidia as smooth or nearly smooth and less skew; for the height of the echinulations an approximate measurement was given. By SEM the same differences between the two spore types have been demonstrated recently, but the height found for the echinulations may be too low.
