Histopathological studies of wood of Swietenia mahagoni Linn. decayed by Fomes durissimus Lloyd reveal the presence of mycelia in all the wood clements and considerable thinning of cell walls and tissue disintegration due to utilization of both lignin and ccllulosc at advanccd stages of decay. Microchcmical tcsts and quantitative analysis of lignin nnd ccllulosc corroborated the results of histopathological studies indicating that the fungus mainly consumes thc lignin along with some amount of cellulose.
