Relatively stable phenotypes of Pinus spp. resistant to Scleroderris lagerbergii , are thought to exist in Europe, where the pathogen is assumed to be indigenous. Selections from such populations are in use for tree‐breeding experiments and for establishment of seed orchards. The pathogen may have been recently introduced into North America, however, and stable, resistant phenotypes would then be in the initial stages of natural selection. Several commercially important species of conifers have not yet been attacked on their native ranges.
